10 things to do before you get into a university
After entrance
test there is always time till the university actually starts. After
tiresome preparations and really bad tests one needs a good break to
clear head before entering into the most important phase of life. Here
are some tips for spending this time wisely .
1) Watch all series and movies
The best way to
spend this time is to be lazy and watch loads of series. There are some
series which are "must watch" like Sherlock, Suits. If you are a
medical student then you are no short of dramas, we have
House,
Grey’s anatomy, private practice. If you are a desi like me then one
can always watch good old PTV dramas Dhoop kinare, Tanhaiyan, Ankahin,
Waris and all time favorite alpha bravo Charlie to relive your childhood
memories. Then there are movies, movies that your friends suggested but
you were too lazy to watch or movies you wanted to watch but were too
busy with college. It can be anything from the classic old Pakistani
movies with bad black and white print (noor jahan’s neend), Indian
lovey-dovey flicks or English sci fi, a good movie is always time well
spent.
2) Get your signature look
When going to a
university one simply has to look dandy. In two years of college one
has a clear idea about his or her personality and is therefore becomes
own perfect stylist. We know what type of clothes we are comfortable in,
what looks good on us. Before going to university you should learn to
carry yourself in public with style. Design your own personal signature
look. Choose your signature perfume, your wrist watch, your hair style.
Fashion is a variable where as your style is a constant, make sure you
get the equation right.
3) Read books
Read as many
novels as you can get your hands on, that’s what I did. Fiction was my
first crush , for book worms like me there no shortage of novels.
Sometimes one time read is not enough for example reading Harry potter
just once is such an injustice. Relive the books you once loved. It’s
more fun to read books you already love as it reminds you why you loved
it the first place. Throughout the academic years we are so busy with
our studies that we rarely get time to read “good books”. A good book
can teach you ages so read good heavy books with loads of life lessons
(for example books by Paulo Coelho, classics like “Wuthering heights”,
modern tragedies like “the kite runner”).When you are all tired and
bored of the “good books” try simple and silly books which in my opinion
are more essential like cheap detective novels, R.L Stine’s fear street
, or short novels in which guy gets the girl. It’s okay not to be smart
all the time. In Urdu one can always read Ashfaq Ahmed (Zawiya) or
Shahabnaama (By Qudratullah shahab).if you want something simpler try
Umera Ahmed.
4) Make your own playlist
Your playlist
can have everything, love songs, party songs, dance numbers, happy
songs, sad songs, old classics, cheesy modern songs, Pakistani songs,
Indian songs, English songs, Punjabi songs, Pushto songs.. All the music
that you love at one place.
5) Plan a family trip
The thing is
life never gets simple as you grow, its only gonna get more busy. As we
grow we tend to forget the important people of our lives, our parents
and our siblings. Once you get into university there is just too much of
everything except time so try to spend as much as quality time with
your family as you get. Even if it means some quarrels and stupid family
fights, do plan a family trip, after all one may grow but never outgrow
family.
6) Learn to drive
Learn to drive
so that your friends can have at least one person in the group who can
provide pick and drop when needed. Boys definitely need to learn driving
because university girls always like men with cars.
7) Know your money
Learn to make a
budget and know your money or you will be broke within a week in
university and I say this from experience. Control your spending
especially on café tasteless yet expensive food. If you are planning to
live in a hostel then handling money is far more important. Also, make
sure you have extra savings hidden somewhere in your socks for
emergencies.
8) Work on your communication skills
Before getting
into university learn to communicate effectively and efficiently. In
university you meet loads of different people, make sure you meet them
nicely. Always greet first, talk polite, be sweet but not overly sweet.
One also needs to be firm in certain situations. Learn to understand
others and talk in a manner that is understandable to others. Your communication skills can help you make a lot of new friends.
9) Make a photo album
Nowadays half
of our photographs are on our cell phones and other half in data
travelers and honestly these two are least secure places of all. Many of
us have lost our precious pictures due to viruses in our computers or
by simply deleting them by accident. Some of them are in folders which
are God knows where. Here’s what one should do about them. Before going
to university, get all the pictures developed of you, your friends, of
every person who is important in your life and arrange them in a photo
album along with funny hand written notes. Like a time capsule, preserve
these memories so that years later you and your college friends can
remember the good old times and have a laugh. I know photo album sound
really out dated yet in my opinion its still the most secure and
beautiful way of recording one’s memories.
10) Going away party
Throw a big”
off to university party”, call every one you have ever known in your
entire life and have a blast. A good party is always a perfect way to
say farewell to best memories and a wonderful way to welcome what lies
ahead.
