Alarming Educational Situation in Pakistan
Pakistan is the only country in Muslim world to have a
nuclear power. It has growing and emerging economy but from recent years it is
facing many challenges which have far-reaching ramifications from which Education
is the most important issue.
The
picture of illiteracy in Pakistan is very grim. Official
statistics released by the Federal Education Ministry of Pakistan, the
overall literacy rate in Pakistan is 46 percent from which the rate for the
girls and woman is 12 percent. There are 163,000 primary schools in Pakistan,
of which merely 40,000 are for the girls. The situation is especially worse in
rural areas due to some due to some social and cultural obstacles which is
surely a devastation for the nation.
If we
look upon the education on basic level (Primary, Elementary and Secondary) we
will face a horrible and obscure situation. I have my personal experience; I’ve
studied in a government school in a rural area. When I was in primary school,
there was no such education or studies there except for the teachers own work.
Teachers were using students for their personal work. Their routine work was
just to come to the school, gossip with each other and that’s all of the day.
The situation was similar for the metric level except for two or three things.
We had no qualified teachers for our science subjects there. We have no mind
set on that level for further education, even I was in the midst between “The
end” and “To be continue”. These practices are still followed in rural areas of
Pakistan by traditional teachers, and the government is silent.
Now if
we came to the higher secondary level, there I observed another thing that
there are many private academies for teaching students at intermediate level.
These academies are either made by a third party or your college teacher is involved
there. I personally observed that thing that a teacher who teach you in a
government college also teach in an academy and he do not put that effort in
his lecture in college which he put in academy. Even many teachers offer you,
if you want to better understanding than come and join my academy. We can
clearly see the business behind the name of education. This thing can also be
observable on schools level, we can see many private schools. The higher
education has also a big issue in Pakistan. Engineering and medical institute
are very less in count and students are more, merit become high and high each
and every year. Government universities are very less in number as compared to
the private sector, this thing effects very badly so that some people couldn’t
afford higher education. If the situation remains the same than in near future
a huge group of youngsters will not be able to complete their education.
Problems
can be mitigate if our government take serious action against them. The
government as well as the people both has to do efforts for the solution. The
government should take action against unserious people, it should provide
qualified teachers and keep an eye on check and balance phase. At higher level
government should build more institutes. Education should be promoted in rural
and backward areas of the country and all necessities should be provided.
